Bass: Classic to Prog with David Overthrow
It is all about the groove! Students will listen to, analyze, and play
nothing but funk bass lines. Students will study lines and styles from
funk masters of the past (from Larry Graham to Bootsy Collins) to the
present as they listen to and study groups like Earth, Wind, & Fire,
James Brown, P-Funk, Tower of Power, Lettuce, and others. Students will
also learn about some of the more modern funk bass techniques used by
bassists such as Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, and others.

Funky Fusion Bass with David Overthrow
This seminar will dive into some of the most common techniques used on
the modern electric bass in the styles of funk and fusion. The music Jaco,
Victor Wooten, Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Flea, Bootsy Collins and
others will be covered. Students will explore topics such as walking bass,
fingerstyle funk, slap & pop style, constructing a solo, improvising
bass lines and more. Students will spend much of the time in the classroom
playing the bass and learning the importance of keeping a groove.

Jaco Pastorius: Bass Style and Music with David Overthrow
Students will study the music and bass playing of the great Jaco Pastorius.
The emphasis of this seminar will be on studying and learning some of
Jaco’s groundbreaking bass lines while studying his style and
learning about some of the techniques he used such as string crossing,
fingerstyle funk, left hand muting and harmonics. The class will also
prepare a Jaco tune for an ensemble piece to be played in concert.

Blues with Dennis McCumber, Pete Sweeney and Dave Overthrow
This course is designed exclusively for the experienced alumni who have
sampled a variety of our curriculum and want to experience something
a little different. Open to guitar, bass, and drums, this combo course
is designed to help you advance on your instrument of choice, while
developing a killer repertoire. Students will spend the morning with
their respective instrument teacher learning advanced techniques, blues
repertoire, and the skills needed to perform in a live playing situation.
Afternoons will be spent in jam sessions with the other instruments
so that the day's lessons can be applied.
Blues Summit
This Blues Summit Course is open to intermediate and advanced guitarists,
bassists, and drummers. Students choose one class from those listed
and attend this class each day. in addition, all Blues Summit students
attend Faculty Master Classes and participate in Performance Class where
students will work with a rhythm section on repertoire related to their
chosen class. Students also attend a Master Artist Workshop with a Guest
Artist.
