BASS SEMINARS 2008

Here are the bass seminars I'll be teaching this summer.

ROCK BASS: FROM CLASSIC TO MODERN

with Dave Overthrow

McLean, VA: June 28 - July 3

Explore the many styles of rock including classic, rockabilly, psychedelic, jam rock, metal, progressive, and modern. Special emphasis is placed on Paul McCartney, John Paul Jones, Jack Bruce, and Roger Waters. In addition to time spent on form and analysis, students will spend a lot of time playing. Students will learn rock grooves from classic to modern and discover how modern rock techniques can be used to create bass lines.

ULTIMATE BLUES BASS – Dave Overthrow

Chicago, IL: July 12-17

In this seminar students will analyze and dissect bass lines of some of the great blues bass players such as Duck Dunn, Roscoe Beck and others. Students will also learn how to expand on the bass lines they already play and learn how to create bass lines from chord changes by learning the necessary tools to do so such as pentatonic scales, modes, 7th chords, and more. An emphasis on the class will be the groove and the importance for students to infuse passion and expression into their bass lines.

ALUMNI ONLY BLUES

with Scott Smith (guitar), Dave Overthrow (bass), & Pete Sweeney (drums)

New Milford, CT: August 3-8

This seminar is designed exclusively for the experienced alumni who have sampled a variety of our curriculum, and want to experience something a little different. Open to guitar, bass, and drums, this combo course is designed to help you advance on your instrument of choice, while developing a killer repertoire. Students will spend the morning with their respective instrument teacher learning advanced techniques, blues repertoire, and the skills needed to perform in a live playing situation. Afternoons will be spent in jam sessions with the other instruments so that the day’s lessons can be applied.

PHAT FUNK AND FUSION MODERN ELECTRIC BASS

with Dave Overthrow

New Milford, CT: August 10-15

This seminar will offer an introspective view on some of the most often used techniques of the modern electric bass in the styles of funk and fusion. The influences of Jaco, Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, Flea, Bootsy, and others will be given consideration. Through listening, discussion, and application, students will

study topics such as walking bass, playing over chord changes, slap & pop, fingerstyle funk, the importance of the groove, and soloing. To participate in this seminar, students should be in the intermediate or above level

in their playing.
